the local press that she cried when she heard the news out of newtown, connecticut. she said "we always think it can't happen here, and we pray fervently that it won't. but as we know from our experience this summer, it can happen anywhere." the mayor of aurora, colorado, is still helping his community try to recover from the mass shooting there this summer where 12 people were shot and killed and another 58 people were shot but survived. he said today from aurora, "our hearts go out to the people of newtown." colorado's senator michael bennet said today, "as coloradans, we know how this type of tragedy can shake a community to its core. we are here for connecticut today." colorado's governor, john hickenlooper, he said, "we know too well what impact this kind of violence has on a community." he said that the first thing he wanted to do today was talk to his counterpart governor in connecticut, dan malloy. governor hickenlooper said, "i cannot put into words how impossible it seems to me that this can happen again so suddenly." virginia tech was the site of a mass shooting five years ag

news. i'm ashleigh banfield in for erin burnett tonight. in newtown, connecticut, it is the scene of one of the worst school shootings in the history of the united states and we can report for you that police have now identified a school shooter as adam lanza. a shooter who killed 26 people today at the sandy hook elementary school here in this small connecticut town. 20 children were killed. 18 of them were pronounced dead right at the scene of the school. two of them were rushed to the hospital, hoping that they could save them. those children died at the hospital. six adults at the school were also shot dead. and they died at the scene as well. nancy lanza, a teacher at the school and a mother of the suspected shooter, was also killed. but she was found dead in her son's home in newtown. adam lanza, the 24-year-old brother ryan lanza, was taken into police custody. ryan lanza taken into police custody for questioning in hoboken, new jersey, earlier today. officials had not labeled him a suspect. but he was taken away in handcuffs. his brother adam died at the scene. but police

and newtown detectives working at the scene in the school. that's not completed and that probably will not be completed for at least another day and a half to two days and i'm putting a time limit on it, it could take longer. as i've explained in previous press conferences, we've done everything we need to do to literally peel back the onion layer by layer and examine every crack and crevice of that facility and that does not include-- or exclude, i should say the outside of the building. the outside of the building is also part of the crime scene every single vehicle in that lot. it's going to be painstaking process. our investigator at the crime scene and at the school and secondarily at the secondary crime scene we used where a female was deceased, could provide good evidence in this investigation, that our investigators will be able to use and hopefully painting a complete picture how, and more importantly, why this occurred. we have established a point of entry. it was, i can tell you it was-- i understand believed he was not voluntarily let into the school at all, that he fo
